How to use the hourly to salary calculator
- Pick the direction. Hourly to salary turns an hourly wage into a yearly salary. Salary to hourly does the reverse, which helps when you compare a salaried job with an hourly one.
- Enter the amount before tax, the way it appears on a job offer or pay stub.
- Check the hours and weeks. The calculator starts at 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year. Change them to match your job: 37.5 hours is a common full-time week in the UK, and part-time hours work the same way.
The results update as you type: the yearly salary (or hourly rate), plus what it comes to a month, every two weeks, for a week worked and for a day worked. Every figure is before tax. Use Copy result to paste them into a message or spreadsheet.
How hourly pay is turned into a salary
The sum is the hourly wage times the hours you are paid for in a year:
Yearly salary = hourly wage × hours per week × paid weeks per year
A standard US full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. So $25 an hour is $25 × 2,080 = $52,000 a year. From there:
- A month is the yearly figure divided by 12: $52,000 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33.
- Every two weeks (biweekly) is the yearly figure divided by 26 paychecks: $2,000.
- A week worked is the hourly wage times your weekly hours: $25 × 40 = $1,000.
- A day worked is a week's pay divided by the days you work: $1,000 ÷ 5 = $200.
Going the other way, hourly rate = yearly salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). A $60,000 salary over 2,080 hours is $28.846..., which rounds to $28.85 an hour. The calculator keeps the exact figure for every other line and rounds each one to the cent only at the end.
A month is not simply four weeks. A year has 52 weeks but only 48 weeks fit into twelve 4-week months, so multiplying a weekly wage by 4 understates monthly pay by about 8%. Dividing the yearly figure by 12 avoids that.
Hourly wage to salary chart
Common hourly rates at 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks a year (2,080 hours), before tax:
| Hourly | Weekly | Monthly | Yearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| $15 | $600 | $2,600 | $31,200 |
| $16 | $640 | $2,773.33 | $33,280 |
| $17 | $680 | $2,946.67 | $35,360 |
| $18 | $720 | $3,120 | $37,440 |
| $19 | $760 | $3,293.33 | $39,520 |
| $20 | $800 | $3,466.67 | $41,600 |
| $22 | $880 | $3,813.33 | $45,760 |
| $25 | $1,000 | $4,333.33 | $52,000 |
| $30 | $1,200 | $5,200 | $62,400 |
| $35 | $1,400 | $6,066.67 | $72,800 |
| $40 | $1,600 | $6,933.33 | $83,200 |
| $45 | $1,800 | $7,800 | $93,600 |
| $50 | $2,000 | $8,666.67 | $104,000 |
A quick check you can do in your head: at 40 hours and 52 weeks, double the hourly rate and add three zeros, then add 4%. $20 an hour doubles to 40,000, plus 4% is $41,600.

| $50,000 | $4,166.67 | $24.04 |
| $60,000 | $5,000 | $28.85 |
| $75,000 | $6,250 | $36.06 |
| $100,000 | $8,333.33 | $48.08 |
Paid holidays, vacation and unpaid weeks off
The 52 weeks include any weeks of paid vacation and paid holidays, because you are paid for them even though you do not work. If some weeks off are unpaid, lower the weeks to the number you are actually paid for. For example, $20 an hour for 40 hours over 50 paid weeks is $40,000 a year, not $41,600. A week you work still pays $800; the month and biweekly figures are then averages across the whole year.
Whether time off is paid depends on where you work. In the US, the Department of Labor says the Fair Labor Standards Act "does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations, sick leave or federal or other holidays", and that these benefits are "matters of agreement between an employer and an employee". In the UK, GOV.UK says almost all workers are "legally entitled to 5.6 weeks' paid holiday a year", so 52 paid weeks is the right figure for most UK employees.
Before tax: what this does not include
All figures are gross pay, before income tax, Social Security, Medicare or National Insurance, pension contributions and any other deductions. Take-home pay is lower, and how much lower depends on where you live and your own situation. The calculator also leaves out overtime, tips, bonuses and shift premiums. If you often work more than 40 hours, the overtime calculator works out time and a half on the extra hours.
It is useful for comparing offers on the same basis. A salaried job at $52,000 and an hourly job at $25 come to the same pay at 40 hours and 52 weeks. If the hourly job pays only 50 weeks a year or the salaried job expects 45 hours a week, the comparison changes, and you can see by how much by changing the hours and weeks.
Questions and answers
How much is $20 an hour a year?
At 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks, $20 an hour is $41,600 a year before tax: about $3,466.67 a month, $1,600 every two weeks and $800 a week.
How many working hours are in a year?
A full-time US year is usually counted as 2,080 hours: 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. At 37.5 hours a week it is 1,950 hours. Paid holidays and vacation are included in those totals.
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the yearly salary by the hours you are paid for in a year. At 2,080 hours, $50,000 a year is about $24.04 an hour. Choose Salary to hourly above and enter your own hours.
Why is monthly pay not four times weekly pay?
A year has 52 weeks, which is about 4.33 weeks a month. The calculator divides the yearly figure by 12, so a $1,000 week comes to $4,333.33 a month rather than $4,000.
Does it work for part-time jobs?
Yes. Enter the hours you actually work each week, such as 20 or 24, and the days you work for the daily figure. The yearly figure is your hourly wage times those hours times the paid weeks.
Is this my take-home pay?
No. Every figure is before tax and deductions. Take-home pay depends on taxes where you live, benefits and retirement contributions, so check your pay stub or payslip.
